Rhodes Airport Taxis: Fares & Tips

Licensed taxis at Rhodes International Airport (RHO), also known as Diagoras, wait at the official rank just outside arrivals and run on a meter, reaching Rhodes Town, about 14–15 km away, in a 20–25 minute drive on a clear run, up to about 35 minutes in peak summer traffic. They are the quickest door-to-door way into town and to the island's resort beaches, and there is no need to book ahead, as a car is almost always waiting at the rank; in quiet periods, or late in the winter season, you may wait a few minutes for the next one.

How fares work

Rhodes taxis run on a meter, so the price reflects the distance and time of your journey rather than a flat rate. On top of the metered fare there are a few legitimate surcharges: an airport pick-up charge, a small fee per large suitcase, and a higher night tariff in the small hours. Because the total depends on traffic and your exact address, a useful habit is to ask the driver for a rough estimate before you set off, and to check that the meter is running. A standard taxi seats up to four passengers with their luggage, and larger groups can ask the rank dispatcher for a bigger vehicle. Make sure the meter is switched on at the start of the trip, and keep the destination address handy on your phone so there is no confusion on arrival.

Payment and tipping

Fares are paid in euros. Many drivers now accept cards, but this is not guaranteed, so carry some small notes. Change for a large bill can be scarce, so notes of around 10 or 20 euros make paying much easier. Tipping is not compulsory; rounding up the fare or adding a little for a helpful driver is a common courtesy rather than an expectation.

Practical tips

• Take only the marked cabs from the rank, and politely decline anyone offering a ride inside the terminal, as unofficial drivers may not be insured.
• Check that the meter is running, and ask for a rough total before you leave.
• For groups or families, one taxi usually beats several bus tickets on value and is far simpler with luggage.
• If you would rather have a driver waiting on arrival at a price fixed in advance, consider a private transfer instead.
